Hating on Others

If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself. What isn't part of ourselves doesn't disturb us.
~ Hermann Hesse

I used to believe that when I despised another person that I was judging fairly. This person was clearly in the wrong, and well-deserving of my scorn.

In fact, the more people who agreed with my position, the more resolutely I clung to my position.

But I gradually came to realize the truth posited in Hesse’s quote. What offends us in another person represents some internal blockage to love within us.

That’s such a challenging concept to accept.

It’s very hard to look at our own shame, disgust, and unworthiness. So we do what healthy egos do – we project that onto others and see ugliness in them.

When we can catch ourselves in this state, it is helpful to quickly remind ourselves that love does not condemn. And our true nature, our true selves, our true reality – is love.
