Judge and Jury
Here is a line from A Course in Miracles that totally swipes the rug out from under our judgmental ego’s feet: “The analysis of ego motivation is never without your own ego involvement.” In other words, when we try to understand why a person behaves the way they do, we are looking at them with our own ego. No matter how well-intentioned we are. It is impossible to analyze anyone without first having chosen our ego as judge and jury.
But there is a way that we can see others with proper clarity. And that’s by letting go of the ego as our teacher and choosing a different guide – the right mind of the Holy Spirit. When we do that, these beautiful lines from the Course light our path of understanding: “Every loving thought is true. Everything else is an appeal for healing and help, regardless of the form it takes.”
No matter what someone says or does, it is either an expression of love or an appeal for help. Regardless of the form it takes! The Course goes on to ask, “Can anyone be justified in responding with anger to a brother’s plea for help?”
Any time we’re tempted to feel anger, resentment, or fear we can recognize that we are judging the situation with our ego. And our inner judge rules, “Guilty!” But we can make a different choice and see everything through the loving eyes of spirit. Peace is the immediate outcome.
