Know Yourself

When you know yourself, your I-ness vanishes.
~ Ibn Arabi

The converse of Ibn Arabi’s amazingly powerful truth is that if we relate to an I, we don’t know ourself. In other words, if I identify with the reflection in the mirror, then I’ve equated my sense of being with this body and self-image.

And when our existence is equated with our body – otherwise known as egoic thinking – then we’ll always perceive a world of lack, suffering, and sadness.

If we choose against the ego, we enter another realm. One where the sense of I-ness (or me-centeredness) disappears. In its place stands a wondrous channel for love that embraces everyone and excludes nothing.

Then we know ourself and our brother. And there is no difference.
