No One Can Be Upset At a Fact

No one can be upset at a fact. It is always an interpretation that gives rise to negative emotions, regardless of their seeming justification by what appears as facts.
~ A Course in Miracles

This quote totally pulls the rug out from many of our emotions, especially anger. If we step back and honestly assess any situation, whatever happened, happened. It is as it is.

Of course, we then interpret what occurred and choose what we consider to be an appropriate response.

But that word “appropriate” is slippery. Appropriate based on what? Based on our judgment, which we believe to be accurate.

We process and interpret everything that goes on around us through the lens of our judgment. We often end up categorizing those events as good, bad, or perhaps inconsequential. But it’s always our interpretation that leads to any emotion.

The next time we find ourselves upset with anything, we’d be wise to pause and recognize that we’re choosing the emotion based on our interpretation of what happened. From there we can consider making a different choice.
