On Sacrifice

You think that everyone outside yourself demands your sacrifice, but you do not see that only you demand sacrifice, and only of yourself.
~ A Course in Miracles

Do you spend a lot of your time in the service of other people? Perhaps a boss, co-workers, family members, or friends and partners? If so, do you feel a sense of sacrifice – as if you are giving up something to benefit others?

Anytime we use our time (and energy) in the service of others, it’s easy to believe that we are sacrificing something of ourselves.

However, consider this line from A Course in Miracles: “You think that everyone outside yourself demands your sacrifice, but you do not see that only you demand sacrifice, and only of yourself.”

The belief in sacrifice comes from our choice for the ego. Everything of the ego is sacrifice – either us sacrificing for others or they for us. But we can release all sacrifice by making a different choice in the mind. The burden and negativity instantly melt away.
